Essentials about our Newspapers Database

Column Descriptions:
  • SURNAME—gives the last name of the individual
  • Given Name—gives the first and perhaps middle names of the individual
  • (Maiden)—a name in parentheses "( )" is the maiden name of a woman
  • [Other married]—names in square brackets "[ ]" are other surnames, possibly other marriages or an alias 
  • Death Place—the place or location where the person died
  • Newspaper—each newspaper was assigned a 3-5 letter abbreviation.
  • Date—the day the obituary appears in the newspaper


Abbreviations used

In the birth and death columns, users will note a set of 3-letter codes used as shorthand in genealogy to identify countries, counties or other land administrative divisions.

Grande Prairie Daily Tribune, 1960 to present
The Grande Prairie Daily Tribune got its start as the Grande Prairie Herald on 25 March 1913 by William C. Pratt, Publisher and editor. The newspaper eventually amalgamated with the Northern Tribune in 1939 to form the Herald-Tribune. It went through several name changes, owners, editors and amalgamations over the years until present day.

Peace River Record Gazette, 1914 to present
The Peace River Record Gazette began as the Peace River Record on 23 July 1914—a weekly newspaper. The paper eventually amalgamated with the Northern Gazette in 1939 to form the Record-Gazette. It went through several name changes, owners, editors and amalgamations over the years until the present.

Feel you need help - Request an Obituary From The Grande Prairie & District Branch

The Grande Prairie & District Branch, Research Committee will assist in filling your request. Our obituary index includes multiple newspaper titles from 1913 to present covering Northwestern Alberta. For obituaries before or after these dates please contact the Grande Prairie Branch.


Entries vary with the amount of information given in the obituary. Each will have minimal information, such as: name, age, death and the title of the newspaper it originates in. Please view the index and submit your request by email or post.


Cost per copy:

The service fee per obituary is $15.00. The cost includes a photocopy of the obituary, postage, plus title of the newspaper, date and page number. All payments should be in Canadian funds. We accept cash, personal cheques or money orders. We apologize that we are unable to accept credit cards or PayPal at this time.
